You can’t say I’m the absolute biggest fan of the average romantic movies, because most of them are cliche and just plain boring. But! I am a fan of GREAT romantic movies. Not every romantic movie sucks. Here are 10 movies I think are definitely worth watching and will make you love the romance genre a little more (if you don’t already).
10. The Notebook
I know, this is fucking cliché. But I’m not going to remove it from this list. I find the story captivating from the onset. The main characters are interesting and loveable. It’s not that original, but it still has original aspects that make this movie not good, but great.
9. Match Point
This dark character-driven movie was everything I was hoping for, and more. The rich dialogue, great performances and that final twist makes this movie definitely worth watching. I don’t think I can say much more about this movie without giving things away, so I’m just gonna recommend you to watch it!
8. Blue Valentine
Ready for tears? Be my guest, this movie is for you. This is not your typical romance, AT ALL. Prepare yourself. Your heart is going to be stomped on. It’s going to be stabbed a few hundred times. It’s going to hurt, but you’ll still want to continue. This movie shows the reality in love and marriages. The writing, directing, acting, soundtrack and cinematography are all so skillfully and thoughtfully put together, you don’t want to look in any other direction than the screen.
7. Me Before You
Another tear-jerker, guys. I remember sitting in the cinema and hearing people sniff all around me. ‘’M’am, can I have a tissue?’’ Emilia Clark’s performance literally lights up this movie. I’ve laughed out loud so many times. Even though this movie has a lot of funny moments, it’s also incredibly sad. Sam Claflin really makes me believe it. He gives an incredible performance, and to be honest, I didn’t know he had it in him. I’d seen him in several movies, but this really exceeded all of them. Turn on your TV and watch!
6. Silver Linings Playbook
I’ve seen this movie over fifteen times and I’m probably going to watch it another fifteen times. The acting is spectacular, the chemistry between Cooper and Lawrence is even better. The way O’Russell deals with dysfunctional families in his movies is super interesting in my opinion. I love seeing how not every family is perfect, even not in movies. Another thing I absolutely love about this movie is the way the relationship between Pat and Tiffany develops. Even though it’s a romantic comedy, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Nothing but love for this film.
5. 500 Days of Summer
This is not your average romantic movie where a couple falls in love and they live happily ever after. This is more than that, and also a bit less. You’ll find out when you watch it. It’s original, funny, heartbreaking and eye-opening. It also does have great performances and a sharp screenplay. Altogether, worth a watch!
I grew up with this movie. I fell in love with Jack and Rose from day one. I’ve smiled a dozen times, I’ve cried twice that. Even though this choice is not original at all, I still had to include it. This was the movie that showed me what love could be. And if love always was like it is in this movie, it would be the most beautiful thing on earth.
Does this one even need explanation? This movie gives you everything. It deals with feelings of a lost love, a lust that can (and will) never go away. Humphrey Bogart gives a powerhouse performance that isn’t easy to forget. If you’ve never watched this movie before, watch it.
2. La La Land
Will I ever get tired of this movie? Nope, I don’t think so. I’ve seen this delightful movie so many times already, you don’t even want to know. I know opinions differ, and some people hate it. I love everything from the actors, the dialogue, the cinematography (which is really amazing work) and the songs to the way they link emotions to colors. I was already in love with Whiplash when it came out, and I knew Chazelle was going to be one of the next big directors. I had high expectations for this movie, but I didn’t expect it to be this good!
1. The Before Triology (okay, I’m cheating, these are three movies)
These movies are so damn good! I love them with all my heart. My favorite is the Before Sunrise, then Before Sunset and then the latest one, Before Midnight. I’m so in love with the way their relationship evolves and how natural and real their conversations are. This movie sucks you in and lets you crave for this kind of love. I’m not going to say too much for if you haven’t watched them yet (but for God’s sake, just do!)
Oh and please, find me a Jesse.
